WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) -- Fire marshals determined that a fire in Waldorf was intentionally set and arson charges are pending.

A Charles County Sheriff's officer responded to the 2200 block of Newburgh Court early Friday morning for a "check on welfare" call from the estranged husband of the resident. Once there, the officer saw fire.

Fire officials say it was later determined that the arson suspect, a woman who lives in the house, intentionally tried to set fires in multiple area of the house. Once one fire was started, the suspect reportedly put it out and then set another fire. Officials say that the woman also appears to have ripped out the smoke alarm in the house.

She suspect was later taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

In total, there is an estimated damage loss of $500.
