05.27.12 Navy Sails Toward 2020 Alternative Energy Goal
The
U.S. Navy, the nation's second-largest military branch and a long-time
early adopter of new energy forms, has set sail on a major new venture -
using biofuels and other alternative fuels to meet half of its energy
needs by 2020. It's already
well on its way toward achieving that mission, with use of 50-50 blends
of biofuels and conventional fuels having tested successfully in planes
and ships.
Tom Hicks, the Navy's deputy assistant secretary for energy, discusses the next steps in this venture, including fueling unmanned aircrafts, such as drones, with biofuels.
